    • A Little Bit of May

Posted at 12:01 am by Kris McNeil, on June 1, 2018

The 365 Blog Circle is a collection of friends working through their 365 photography projects together. We are posting favorite shots on a monthly basis. Welcome to our May round up!

Holy Biscuits the past 50 days have about eaten my lunch. If it weren’t for my 365 friends I may have punted on this project. It has been crazy life of late. My husband retired last month. The best part is that we like each other. So while this is fun, we’re adjusting to the 24/7 lifestyle of what we do with our time alone and together. It’s all good though because we talk about it a lot. (ILY Sweetie!)

So on top of that, we’ve been doing some traveling and family stuff. It’s always something. Usually something fun, but there are only so many hours, right? Whew! But I caught up on Flickr. Still working on catching up on my Instagram, but I’m only doing that a few posts at a time.

Blah blah blah! We’re all busy, Kris! Show us the photos!

A couple weeks ago we helped our youngest son move into his summer sublet. He goes to Purdue, but he got into a summer program at Boston University and he’s pretty excited about the whole thing. His boyfriend is going to graduate school at MIT, so it’s going to be a good summer for them. And we had a blast getting to be in Boston.

      Glass flowers

We visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History and saw among other things the glass flower exhibit. The flowers in the images above are made of glass. Go ahead, look again. Aren’t they amazing? The whole room was full of incredible pieces. At one point I told my son that they are so lifelike that it was almost boring. They were made starting in 1887 by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka for the year round study of botany.  The Blaschkas came from a family of glass artists. Rudolf Blaschka was quoted, “The only way to become a glass modeler of skill, I have often said to people, is to get a good great-grandfather who loved glass.”

When we left the museum, there was a great gathering of horn players assembled. They were called The School of Honk and they were definitely having a good day.

This little guy was a big fan.

We also did a lot of walking around Cambridge and Boston. There’s never a dull moment in the city.

This is part of the Glove Cycle bronze sculpture by Mags Harries at Porter Square Station in Cambridge. There are brass gloves, 54 in all, all over the station. The link includes a 3:54 minute audio link with artist discussing this installation. I found it charming.

Ahh Boston! Thanks for the good times. We’ll see you in August when it’s time to pack our son back to Purdue for his senior year.

Please continue around the blog circle with the absolutely delightful work of Laura Froese of Paraphrase Photography.

7 on 7 is a photographic blog circle of friends posting 7 photos on the 7th of the month. Grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and walk through our circle with us. It will do your heart and soul some good.

Oh April!! What a whirlwind you were! So much so that I am like a month behind on posting for my 365. Still editing, just haven’t been posting. I’m home for a little bit now, so I’ll catch up.

So what was so cool about April?? Lots of things, but two of the most fun were going to Galveston for the Tall Ships Challenge and going on a bluebonnet tour.

Tall Ships in a nutshell is a gathering of selected Tall Ships and they race from city to city. The Gulf Coast Challenge started in Galveston this year, then went to New Orleans and Pensacola. We went down for the opening day “Parade of Sail” where all the ships sailed up and down the coast for all to see. It was quite a sight even though it was cloudy and windy. There were six ships in all. I may have to do a separate post about this. They were all so beautiful.

Tall Ships-1The Elissa is based out of Galveston.

Tall Ships-10The Oliver Hazard Perry is based out of Newport, Rhode Island

      Tall Ships-13

We spent the next day touring the ships and getting our Tall Ships passports stamped like 6 year old kids. It was delightful getting to chat with the crew members who work aboard these ships. Some are used as school ships to teach people how to sail them.

Ahh but what else was great about April? I got to spend two days with Jason Weingart on one of his bluebonnet tours. There were only a handful of us in the workshop (a “van-full” if you will), but we all got along swimmingly and had a delightful couple of days. It was nice to be with people who are so willing to share tips and make sure each other is getting the shot they want.

That might be eight photos, but I really loved the field of little donkeys. They were adorable. Ahh April! Such good stuff.

Speaking of good stuff, keep clicking around our circle to see the always fabulous work of my friend Kim Thompson Steel. See you next time!

      Denver-3

      SO!

Last August my oldest son got married and he and his new wife were on their honeymoon road trip through the Rockies when their truck broke down in Cheyenne on the way home and it needed a new transmission and then they needed someone to go get the truck and drive it the rest of the way home to Oklahoma because he had to deploy and they were out of vacation days.

      And that someone was me.

Lucky for me, that meant a stop over in Denver to see old friends. One was my lovely friend Angie Dornier.  She was free to go on a photo walk in Denver, her new home and my old home. There were new things for both of us to see.

      Denver-4Colorful Parking

We took a walk through the RiNo District of Denver. Back when I lived in Colorado, this historic area had fallen on hard times and we didn’t go there because it just wasn’t the safest place to be. I was so excited to see what it is now all these many years later: a home for artists and creatives of all types. We walked a few streets and were amazed by the street art. Angie told me it was all to be painted over and started fresh the next weekend. It was a little bittersweet knowing it would all be gone, but exciting to think of what would come after it.

We watched this gentleman at work for a while. He is Thomas “Detour” Evans and his work is amazing. You can find him on IG: @Detour303 where he does an art tip every Tuesday. He was very kind to let us shoot around him.

This was painted on ridges down the whole side of the building. You had to be lined up just right to see the image.

Thanks to Angie for a delightful day. It’s always a good time with you. Please continue around our circle! Coming next is the always brilliant work of Janice of Shine Photo Design!

      See you all in May!

    • A Little Bit of March

The 365 Blog Circle is a collection of friends working through their 365 photography projects together. We are posting favorite shots on a monthly basis. Welcome to our March round up!

Happy Easter! I hope everyone got a chocolate bunny and some of the best candy ever which would of course be Reece’s eggs. (Oooh yeah!)

March was fun and fast and YAY the sun came out!!

I started March off by seeing Pink (or P!nk if we’re getting technical – I love her however she spells her name) in Wichita with my oldest niece and my daughter-in-law. We definitely got the party started.

I started editing a batch of photos I took in Denver last autumn when I went on photo walk with my friend Angie Dornier, who is a fabulous photographer and even nicer friend. We had a delightful day wandering around the RINO District of Denver. I’ll be writing more about that in my 7 on 7 this month. (Woah! See into the future! )

March in these parts includes the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. My niece was home for spring break, so we went to see Garth Brooks show at the end of the Rodeo even though she was only 6 when he retired the first time. He opened the first night of the Rodeo and then closed the last night two weeks later with record setting attendance. If you’re thinking that was one giant sing-a-long, you’d be right. Even after all these years, He’s still got it.

I hope the sun and warmth of new days bring you all the joy you seek. Please continue around our circle for the photographic talents of Elyse Jokinen! She has lots of news!

The only cure for my rainy day blues is to grab my big rainbow umbrella and get outside to shoot in the rain. I have to go on “new growth” seek to calm my cabin fevered brain. I balance the umbrella on my shoulder and shoot at the same time, but then I need a massage to loosen up all the muscles in my neck and shoulders. Small price to pay for a little happiness and a good excuse to get a massage. (Like I need an excuse – hah!)

The sun is starting to break through the clouds that have overstayed their welcome in south Texas. The only consolation is that rain brings a good wildflower season and the blooms are just around the corner. Welcome, Spring! We have been waiting for you!

The 365 Blog Circle is a collection of friends working through their 365 photography projects together. We are posting favorite shots on a monthly basis. Welcome to our February circle!

Oh February. What did you do with the sunshine? It happens every year and I know summer is coming and I should be careful for what I wish, but damn.

We did have some fun this month though! We got to see Walk the Moon one night and that was just an all night dance party. Even Mr. Don’t Make Me Go to Concerts had a good time.

Then there was more music when we went to Purdue to see our youngest who plays in the Purdue Wind Ensemble. We know our days are numbered for these kinds of events and just feel blessed that he has kept doing this as long as he has and still loves it.

7 on 7 is a photographic blog circle of friends posting 7 photos on the 7th of the month. Come take a walk through our circle. It will do your heart and soul some good.

We’re Baaacck! The 5 on 5 Circle of 2016 had become the 7 on 7 Circle for 2018. Two more years, why not two more photos. We also have some new people in the circle whom I know you’re going to love. Woohoo!

At the End of January I took a 36 hour trip to New Orleans with a couple of dear friends. Well, we were in New Orleans 36 hours. We won’t talk about the drive from and to Houston nor the rain nor the traffic. The only good thing about that drive is the Cajun food along the way. Oh yeah. I definitely ate my way across Louisiana and back.

New Orleans never disappoints for cuisine nor for people watching. There is always something good to see. One of my girlfriends had never been there, so we did a bit of N.O. 101 walking around.

      New Orleans-1Jackson Square musicians.

New Orleans-38Jackson Square tarot readers. Nope, no readings were done. Mama does not play with that stuff in New Orleans. I mean, I’m not superstitious, but nope.

New Orleans-43More musicians. They were all over town that weekend. What a treat!

We were there during Carnival Season. For those who do not know, Carnival Season starts on the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6) and ends on Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday” which is the big party day before Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season. Most people think of Mardi Gras as a one day party with fun and parades, but really it’s the finale of the whole of Carnival Season.

      New Orleans-55Commuting.

New Orleans-54Couldn’t resist this bit of sweetness.

New Orleans-93A must stop was Cafe du Monde for their famous beignets and coffee. There may be better beignets in town, but for a first visit, Cafe du Monde is the way to go.

New Orleans-141And the streetcars! I have such a thing for them.
We took a ride into the Garden District for dinner.

Ok so why New Orleans for 36 hours? Well, I’ll tell you. I love true crime and I love the podcast My Favorite Murder. The podcast hosts (the awesome Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark) were doing a live show in New Orleans, and I made my girlfriends go with me. They think I’m a little crazy, but it really was a lot of fun!

New Orleans-1 (2)Bonus pic for you MFM fans!

Please continue around our circle with the amazing work of my friend Kristina Rust. Kristina has fabulous eye and I have been a big fan of her work for a long time.

    • A Little Bit of January

Posted at 12:07 am by Kris McNeil, on February 1, 2018

The 365 Blog Circle is a collection of friends working through their 365 photography projects together. We are posting favorite shots on a monthly basis. Welcome to our January circle!

Hello 2018! Hello Blog! It’s been a minute (as all the kids are saying these days).

I swear I wasn’t hiding under my covers all of 2017. In fact, My oldest son got married in August and we all could not have asked for a better day. (I wrote about my son and his wife in my December 2016 post ).

Emma & Kegan Wedding Randy Coleman Photography (426)Photo credit Randy Coleman Photography

On to 2018! One of my favorite things about January was getting to be part of a Beauty in Brokenness gathering run by my friend Amy Hauser. Beauty in Brokenness is part of Amy’s Mosaics of Mercy ministry. The mission of Mosaics of Mercy is to support the community struggling with addiction and mental health issues through education, helping people find support and also through helping the community come to see that “there is beauty in brokenness”. They seek to inspire recovery through “testimony, intentional prayer and artistic expression”. To say that Amy is all in on supporting the community would be a vast understatement. Her mission is one of great challenge, but also great love. Being broken, be it a little or a lot, is nothing of which to be ashamed. In fact, the more we share, the more we can support each other. My town is blessed to have Amy as a resource.

I met Amy though my running group. Yesterday, through Beauty in Brokenness, a few of our running friends and I got to be part of a network of love by working mosaic hearts. This is a finished heart:

      Mosaics of Mercy-107

      So here’s how it works!

The pieces represent the brokenness in our lives. As Amy said, we all have a plan for our lives until the plan changes. Mosaics of Mercy is first and foremost a Christian ministry. The idea of the artist building and creating the heart is meant to symbolize how letting God in to be the artist of healing brokenness can lead to something beautiful. People come to make hearts for themselves or to share with others to show them they aren’t walking their crisis alone.

Here’s my favorite part. Those hearts we made, we didn’t take them with us. We made one, finished one that someone else had started, and then took home a completed heart. We, and those who came before and after our gathering, were building a net of love and support. Each step of the heart building process has meaning and Amy was careful to express each step of the process. Building mosaic hearts is a tangible way to perceive letting God be the artist of our healing. Very simply: we need a foundation, to gather our broken pieces and construct something new, to not be afraid when trials come along and we lose sight, and to trust in the care that the Artist will put into us.

We started by picking the pieces we wanted to use on our hearts. What fun that was!

      Mosaics of Mercy-44
      Mosaics of Mercy-30
      Mosaics of Mercy-17

Amy even let us break dishes! Now THAT is some good therapy! I definitely had some fun with that.

      Mosaics of Mercy-29Stop! Hammer Time!

We then put some thin grout onto pre-cut plywood hearts and then started to place our pieces.

      Mosaics of Mercy-66
      Mosaics of Mercy-52
      Mosaics of Mercy-51

At this stage, we had done everything to these particular hearts that we would do. Now they were left for someone to come after us and do the remaining steps. Our group shelved our hearts and continued working with hearts that a gathering before us had constructed.

And here is where God comes in to smooth out the rough edges.

      Mosaics of Mercy-91
      Mosaics of Mercy-90
      Mosaics of Mercy-89
      Mosaics of Mercy-92

These hearts were left behind to dry, but Amy had hearts for us to take home that were finished and polished up and prayed over. I’ll always remember this day. Thanks for all you do, Amy!

    • 366 for 2016 in the books!

Posted at 3:12 pm by Kris McNeil, on January 12, 2017

Wahoo! I wrapped up my 366 project with – drumroll please – 366 photos! I know 365s are kind of old hat, but this is the first one I’ve completed, so I’m a happy girl.

I put together everything in one fast paced video and I was kind of going for the big finale fireworks effect I was feeling at the time. That can be seen here.

I did make milestone videos along the way and those can be found here.

The whole photo album is on Flickr.

I’m thinking for 2017 I need to complete a couple actual physical albums of a few trips. I still owe my sister an album from the Paris and London trip we took in 2010 for one. Yes, that’s how far back some of these edits go. Yikes! I also have all my mom’s slides and photos and I should really clean those up and scan them for my siblings. And I dusted off my film camera last weekend. Very tempting. I have a few photos dancing in my head asking to be shot. And my oldest is getting married in August, so you know there needs to be a video for that weekend. Oh yeah.

I hope all your 2017 projects bring you joy.

      xoxo

December was a bit of a blur of travel and cookies and more travel and more cookies… This is what happens when one has kids in both college and the Navy.  And every bit was good even if our weather was a little warm.

Mom’s ornaments. My mom made dozens of little felt ornaments in the 60s and 70s. They were always on the tree when I was a kid, but she upgraded herself to a fancier tree once we all moved out. I had to have these cuties on our tree though even if only to have a little bit of her with us this Christmas.

And did I mention cookies?? While my mom passed away only this year, we lost my husband’s wonderful mom in 2005. Every year with her we made these sugar cookies. Now we all have our own little tweaked versions of them, but we all still make them. We made them with our kids every year and still do. This year I passed the recipe to my son and his fiancée and gave them their own rolling pin. My other son got them cookie cutters for Christmas. We take this cookie thing pretty seriously.

Mix the flour in by hand. It’s the only way. This is my husband’s job.

      Awesomeness. Frosting is key.

Don’t let the simplicity fool you. It has been claimed by others that these cookies have led to at least two pregnancies. All I know is that people were trying to conceive and after having our cookies – ta dah! Crazy, I know. I make no claims to this myself. Just passing on what I have been told by people who have had these cookies, but just saying, if you don’t need another baby, might want to be careful.

I mentioned the warm December we had, which while not great for roasting chestnuts on an open fire, has been nice for being outside while the south prepares to host winter guests. While everyone up north is hunkering down, we’re setting the table. All the berry bushes around town are full up with the banquet for the coming birds.

feed-the-birds The birds will flock in and pick this all clean in no time at all.

Wishing you all the very best in 2017. xoxo
